Access to Credit Linked to Conservative Voting Patterns in US Elections.
Access to credit affects voting behavior in the US. Uncertainty in credit access leads to more conservative voting choices. By analyzing credit reports and voting data from 2004-2016, researchers found that voters near credit score thresholds tend to vote Republican. A 10pp increase in these marginal voters results in a 2.7pp increase in Republican votes and a 2.6pp decrease in Democratic votes. Winning candidates in uncertain areas tend to use more conservative language.
