Online polls underestimate support for Black candidates, impacting election outcomes.
Online surveys often used by researchers may not accurately represent Black voters and other minorities nationwide. A study in Philadelphia found that online surveys had a low response rate and were more likely to be answered by White residents with college degrees. This led to incorrect predictions in the mayoral primary election. Even when adjusted, online surveys still underestimated support for the winning candidate, especially compared to in-person exit polls. Similar patterns were seen in Chicago, highlighting the need for alternative survey methods to better capture the diversity of the population.
