Illegal primate trade thrives on TikTok, endangering endangered species worldwide.
The study looked at how many primates are being sold on TikTok and where they come from. They found 42 ads for monkeys from 5 different countries, with spider monkeys, rhesus macaques, and common marmosets being the most advertised. Most marmosets were from the UK, rhesus macaques from Pakistan, and spider monkeys from the USA. Some of the species were endangered, and these were more likely to be sold illegally. The study suggests that stricter laws are needed to protect primates and other wildlife, especially if we want to reach the UN's goals for sustainable development by 2030. TikTok should also do more to stop the trade of wild animals on their app.
