Disputed Twitter tags backfire, boosting misinformation's perceived truth among Trump voters with high political knowledge.
The study tested if adding "disputed" tags to Trump's false election claims on Twitter could reduce belief in misinformation. Trump supporters with high political knowledge still believed the false claims even with the tags. Biden supporters were not affected, but third-party voters and non-voters were slightly less likely to believe the misinformation. Overall, the tags did not change people's beliefs about election fraud or fairness. This suggests that disputed tags may not be effective in disputing widely spread misinformation.
