The article explores the challenges faced by LGBTIQ+ individuals in certain African countries, where their identities are often illegal and stigmatized. Even in countries where same-sex relationships are legal, discrimination and social alienation persist. The researchers used queer theory and sexual minority stress theory to understand how laws, education, and healthcare systems impact the psychosocial well-being of LGBTIQ+ people. Discrimination, stigma, and survival strategies hinder the overall mental health of these individuals. The findings are relevant not only to African countries but also to other cultures with similar collectivist values.
