Deadly floods on the rise in the Pyrenees, costing millions in damages.
The article presents a new database called PIRAGUA_flood that covers floods in the Pyrenees from 1981 to 2015. It analyzes flood events, fatalities, and compensation payments in different regions. The study identifies weather patterns associated with floods and shows a slight increase in flood events over time for the entire Pyrenees massif. Catalonia had the highest number of flood events, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine showed a significant increase in floods. The findings suggest that the eastern part of the Pyrenees experiences more floods than the western part, with specific weather patterns contributing to these events.
