Omega blocking pattern triggers extreme weather chaos across Europe in 2023
The study looked at how big weather patterns caused extreme weather in Europe in early September 2023. They used data from weather forecasts and satellites. A blocking pattern in the atmosphere made a storm over Spain with heavy rain and flooding. Another storm formed over Greece, bringing lots of rain to Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria. This storm, called "Storm Daniel," caused floods in Libya and carried dust to Egypt. At the same time, a high-pressure system caused a heatwave in northern countries. This study shows how big weather patterns can create unusual weather over a whole continent for many days.
