Restoring Trust in Elections: Elite and Non-Elite Cues Make a Difference
The article explores how to restore trust in U.S. elections, especially among Republicans. The researchers conducted two experiments with over 1,200 participants to test different ways to increase election trust. They found that when Republicans are exposed to messages from both elite and non-elite party members, or just elite members, their trust in future elections and belief in the legitimacy of the 2020 election improves. However, the effects vary between strong and moderate Republicans. Strong Republicans are more influenced by elite cues, while moderate Republicans benefit more from a combination of elite and non-elite cues. This suggests that tailored approaches are needed to rebuild election support among different groups.
