More Women Candidates, Fewer Teen Births: A Recipe for Healthier Communities
Teen birth rates in the US are a big problem, but having more women running for office can help lower them. A study looked at elections from 2010 to 2020 and found that when more women ran for office in a county, the number of teen births in that county went down. This was true in different election years, especially during midterm and presidential elections. The study also showed that not having health insurance can lead to more teen births. So, having more women candidates in local elections can be a good way to reduce teen births and improve public health.
