New glass formula solves sulfate retention issue in radioactive waste disposal.
High level radioactive waste is being turned into glass for safe disposal, but retaining sulfate in the glass can be tricky. Scientists are working to improve sulfate retention in the glass by adjusting the composition of the glass frit used in the process. They conducted experiments with different types of simulated waste glasses to find the best combination. The results show that a specific frit composition and sulfate concentration limit have been recommended for the next batch of waste to be processed.
