Peach cultivars reveal surprising sugar changes during growth stages.
The researchers studied how sugars in fruits and leaves of three peach cultivars change from when the fruit starts growing until it becomes overripe. They found that Redhaven peaches had the highest sugar content, followed by Favorita and Prodigiosa. Different sugars like sucrose, glucose, fructose, and sorbitol were present in both fruits and leaves. In Redhaven and Favorita fruits, sucrose was the most abundant sugar, while in Prodigiosa fruits, it was sorbitol. Sorbitol was the most abundant sugar in the leaves. The decrease in sucrose in leaves during fruit growth suggests that this sugar is mainly transported from leaves to fruits.
