Radioactive waste turned into glass for safe disposal.
Scientists at the Savannah River Site are working on processing high-level radioactive waste by turning it into glass. They mix the waste sludge with glass frit and pour it into stainless steel canisters for disposal. So far, they have made about 100 canisters of vitrified waste. In the future, they plan to use a mix of waste sludge, cesium, and glass frit for processing. The researchers are updating their processing methods to increase production rates and are working on solving operational problems they have encountered.
