Kentucky forests on track to reclaim old-growth status, benefiting biodiversity.
The study looked at young and old forests in Kentucky to see if they were developing old-growth characteristics. Old forests had more large trees, woody debris, and complex canopy structures compared to young forests. Both forests had similar total tree density, but old forests had more large dead trees. Young forests had more maple trees growing under oak trees, while old forests had a more varied timeline of tree growth.
