New Storm Impact Scale Predicts Barrier Island Destruction Levels.
A new storm impact scale for barrier islands has been developed to categorize the effects of storms on these natural landforms. The scale considers the relationship between storm forces and the shape of the coast, dividing impacts into four levels. Level 1 is when waves only affect the foreshore, causing temporary erosion. Level 2 occurs when waves reach the base of the dunes, leading to erosion. Level 3 involves waves overtopping the dunes, causing landward sand movement. Level 4 is when a storm surge completely submerges the island, resulting in significant landward sand transport. Each level represents a different level of impact on the barrier island.
