Mangrove-lined creeks key feeding grounds for juvenile fish in Tanzania.
Mangroves are important feeding grounds for fish, but the extent of their importance depends on the type of mangrove habitat. A study in Tanzania compared mangrove-lined creeks that retain water during low tides to fringing mangroves that drain completely. Fish in the mangrove-lined creeks mainly feed from the mangrove habitat, while fish in the fringing mangroves also feed from adjacent habitats. This is because fish in the creeks have more continuous access to the mangroves, allowing them more time to feed compared to fish in the fringing mangroves, which have to migrate with the tides.
