New Study Reveals Surprising Snow Distribution Patterns in Montana Mountains
Snow distribution in the Bitterroot Mountains, Montana, is not well understood. Three snow models were used to study snow levels from 2000-2010. Most snow is found above 1950 meters, with little difference between north and south-facing slopes. Snow levels increase with elevation at lower altitudes, but remain constant above 2000 meters. The way snow accumulates varies between valleys and ridges. The factors affecting snow distribution in this area are unique and may not apply to other regions.
