Lucerne fodder with high saponin content was added to the diet of male buffalo calves to see how it affected their nutrient intake and methane emissions. The study found that adding lucerne fodder to their diet increased their dry matter intake and nutrient utilization. It also reduced methane emissions by 32%, showing that saponins in the fodder can help decrease methane production. This suggests that using lucerne fodder in the diet of buffalo calves can be a practical and effective way to reduce methane emissions while improving nutrient intake and utilization.
