The discovery of pearl millet remains in northern Ghana shows that people in that region were growing this crop over 3000 years ago. This is the earliest evidence of pearl millet in sub-Saharan Africa. The findings suggest that the Kintampo culture had developed successful ways to grow food in both savannas and tropical forests.
