New Modular Reactor Design Revolutionizes Energy Production and Safety Standards
The MASLWR project aimed to design a safe and cost-effective small light water reactor. They developed a modular design for easy transportation and installation, with a 150 MWt thermal power and 35 MWe electrical output. The reactor uses 8% enriched UO2 fuel and has a 5-year refueling cycle, with a projected 60-year lifespan. Economic analysis showed a potential net electrical output of 1050 MWe with a total capital cost of $1241/kWe and a busbar cost of 3.4 cents/kWh.
