Changing habitat and harvest regulations impact North American duck population dynamics.
Wild duck populations respond to changes in habitat and hunting regulations. By studying redhead ducks, researchers found that population size is influenced by the number of breeding ponds and hunting limits. Population booms can happen after wet years, but density regulation balances out moderate changes in pond numbers. Male ducks are not greatly affected by hunting regulations or density dependence. This study shows how habitat and hunting rules interact to shape duck population dynamics.
