Groundbreaking Study Reveals Monsoons Trigger Significant Groundwater Discharge in Bay
The researchers used sea-bed porewater temperature to track groundwater discharge into the Bay of Bengal. By mapping temperature and chemical profiles, they identified zones where groundwater flows into the ocean. These zones are rich in nutrients that support marine life. The study estimated that about 1.16 million cubic meters of groundwater are discharged annually into the Bay of Bengal, with higher rates during the monsoon seasons. The findings show that monsoons increase the movement of groundwater from the tidal flat sediments into the ocean.
