New offshore pipeline project saves millions, revolutionizes North Sea gas transport.
The Brent field in the North Sea is a major oil and gas reservoir. A joint venture between Shell and Esso has created the FLAGS Project to transport gas and liquids to Scotland for processing. The offshore pipeline is 450 km long and 36 inches in diameter. The gas is processed at St. Fergus, while the liquids are sent to a fractionation plant at Mossmoran. The system can handle 1,000 MMscfd of methane gas and 100,000 b/d of liquids. The project saved about pounds138 million through careful planning and engineering.
