Nitrogen fertilizer rates in paddy fields linked to increased nitrous oxide emissions.
The study looked at how different amounts of nitrogen fertilizer affect the release of nitrous oxide gas from paddy fields in China. They found that more nitrogen fertilizer led to more nitrous oxide being released. During the rice growing season, the gas peaked when the plants were growing quickly. In the wheat growing season, the gas peaked when the second round of fertilizer was added. Overall, the wheat season accounted for most of the nitrous oxide emissions.
