New Biofilm Technology Promises Enhanced Removal of Pharmaceuticals from Wastewater.
The study looked at how pharmaceuticals are removed in wastewater treatment plants in Sweden. They found that some plants are better at removing pharmaceuticals than others, especially those with nitrogen removal. Activated sludge with older ages and carrier biofilms are more effective at removing pharmaceuticals. Some pharmaceuticals are broken down with or without oxygen. Carrier biofilms are particularly good at removing pharmaceuticals, suggesting new treatment methods could improve removal of these pollutants.
