Political orientation influences prejudice suppression, impacting attitudes towards marginalized groups.
Conservative people tend to have more prejudice towards certain groups than liberal people. Three studies looked at why this happens. They found that wanting to suppress prejudice (IMS and EMS) can partly explain why conservatives are more prejudiced. Justifying prejudice (RWA and social dominance orientation) also plays a role. When both suppression and justification are considered, only RWA partly explains prejudice towards some groups, while RWA and IMS fully explain prejudice towards others. Thinking about interacting with a disliked group can change how much suppression affects prejudice. Overall, suppressing prejudice helps explain why political orientation is linked to prejudice.
