Firms with specialized inventors tend to create technologies with a narrow focus, which then leads their inventors to remain specialized. This two-way relationship affects how firms grow and why resources and organization look similar within a firm but different across firms. The study used natural experiments in the U.S. communication equipment industry to show this connection.
