Chinese rivers' sediment transport patterns revealed, impacting marine ecosystems and coastlines.
A model study looked at how sediment from Chinese rivers moves in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea. The model considered currents, tides, and waves to see where sediment goes. Sediment from the Huanghe River mostly ends up in the Yellow Sea Trough, while sediment from the Old Huanghe Delta goes there too. Sediment from the Changjiang River mostly goes to a mud patch off the coast of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces. It's hard for sediment to reach the Okinawa Trough mud patch. The model had trouble explaining why sediment deposits in certain areas, so more research is needed.
