The researchers developed a simple way to analyze bridge decks that considers how the girders underneath affect the bending of the deck. By using a method based on elastic plate theory, they could assess how the stiffness and spacing of the girders, as well as the length of the bridge, impact the bending of the deck. Their method was tested and found to accurately predict the maximum bending moments in a bridge deck.
