Intercropping boosts nutrient uptake in wheat, maize, and faba bean crops.
The study looked at how different fertilizers and intercropping methods affect the uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus by wheat, maize, and faba bean plants. They found that nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, as well as intercropping, increased nitrogen uptake by wheat. Phosphorus fertilizer and intercropping also increased phosphorus uptake by wheat. The border rows of wheat intercropped with maize took up less nitrogen as the nitrogen fertilizer rate increased, but phosphorus uptake was not affected by phosphorus fertilizer. Maize intercropped with faba bean absorbed more nitrogen and phosphorus compared to maize intercropped with wheat. Fertilization and intercropping did not affect nitrogen and phosphorus uptake by faba bean.
