Chesil Beach in the UK is a famous gravel beach with a mysterious past. By using ground penetrating radar, scientists discovered how the beach evolved over time. First, a small sand and gravel beach formed, followed by a growth phase with more gravel from eroded slopes. The beach then expanded landward with washover fans, and later grew seaward with sediment abundance. This growth happened during a period of stable or slightly falling sea levels. The beach is now mostly inactive, except for occasional storm events that reshape the sand. The study shows how sea level changes and sediment supply shape the evolution of barrier beaches like Chesil Beach.
