Dust storm detection technology reveals hazardous air quality conditions in Iran
Dust storms in Iran were studied using satellite data to see how well it can detect particulate matter in the air. The satellite images showed where the dust storms were and which way they were blowing. During dust storms, the air quality was unhealthy, and the satellite data matched ground measurements of particulate matter. However, the satellite had trouble accurately measuring very low or very high levels of particulate matter. This study is the first to look at how well this satellite can detect dust storms and their impact on air quality.
