Intercropping corn and legumes boosts land use efficiency by 66%! 🌽🌱
A study was done to see how growing corn and legumes together affects their growth and yield. Corn didn't change much when grown with legumes, but legumes like peanuts, soybeans, and mungbeans had lower leaf area and weight when intercropped. The yield of peanuts, soybeans, and mungbeans decreased when intercropped, with the number of pods per plant being the most affected. However, intercropping corn with legumes increased land use efficiency by up to 66%, depending on the legume. Corn and peanuts together had the best land use efficiency. The study also looked at how light and nutrients affect the plants when grown together.
