Home composting reduces landfill waste by 20% in West London
Home composting in West London helps reduce household waste going to landfills. A 3-year study found that on average, each household diverted 370 kg of biodegradable waste per year using a standard 290 L compost bin. Kitchen waste made up 29%, paper 2%, and garden waste 69% of inputs. About 20% of households in the area composted, leading to a 20% recycling rate for biodegradable waste. Composting was aerobic, with minimal methane emissions. Using home-produced compost improved flower growth compared to peat or untreated soil. The study also looked at compost composition, airborne particles, and attraction of pests.
