Organic farming leads to higher yield variability, challenges sustainability efforts.
Crop yield can vary from year to year, and different farming methods can affect this variability. A study compared conventional, no-till, low-input, and organic farming systems over 12 years. Conventional and no-till systems had similar yields, while low-input had lower yields in winter wheat. Organic farming had lower yields in corn and winter wheat. Organic farming also had higher yield variability in soybean and winter wheat compared to other systems. Low-input farming had lower yield variability in corn compared to conventional farming. Overall, alternative farming methods like no-till and low-input can have similar yield and variability to conventional farming.
