Soil management boosts crop yield by 5% annually, improving food security.
Different soil management systems impact soil structure and physical properties in a clay loam soil. By comparing permanent grassland and arable land, researchers found that grassland soil had better structure, resulting in lower water deficits, more workable days, and improved soil aeration for potato crops. This led to a potential 5% increase in potato tuber yield in certain years. The study used field investigations, laboratory experiments, and simulation modelling to analyze soil properties and their effects on crop growth.
