Juvenile abalones can survive extreme salinity levels, impacting aquaculture industry.
Juvenile abalones were tested to see how well they can handle different levels of saltiness and temperature changes. The study found that abalones can survive in higher salt levels if the temperature is lower, and in lower salt levels if the temperature is higher. The abalones did best in 35‰ saltiness at 20°C or lower, surviving in salt levels higher than 45‰. They also did well in 25‰ saltiness at 30°C or higher, surviving in salt levels lower than 14‰.
