Invasive plant removal boosts native diversity and tree seedling growth.
Invasive plant removal methods affect how native plants respond. Researchers studied removing Japanese stiltgrass in US forests using different methods. Hand-weeding and post-emergent herbicide increased native plant diversity and biomass. Post-emergent plus pre-emergent herbicide did not improve plant diversity. Native tree seedlings thrived more in herbicide-treated plots. Different removal methods impact native plant communities differently, showing that invasive plants can harm native plants.
