Asia Faces Increasing Urban Flood Disasters Due to Climate Change
Urban flood disasters are a major problem worldwide, especially in Asia. They are caused by heavy rainfall, human activities like blocking drainage channels, and climate change. To manage these disasters, both structural (like building dams) and non-structural measures (like flood forecasting) are needed. In developing countries, flood management is mostly reactive, but it should be proactive to reduce damage. This involves cooperation between governments, NGOs, private sectors, and the public. A strategic framework for integrated flood management includes steps like preparedness, response, and recovery. Thailand's urban flood management is discussed as an example. The key is to work together to prevent and minimize the impact of floods.
