Nitrate in Wheat Seedlings Boosts Nutrient Uptake for Faster Growth.
Nitrite and nitrate uptake in wheat seedlings from potassium solutions showed a pattern of slow initial rate followed by accelerated rate. Nitrate uptake was faster and restricted by nitrite, while nitrite uptake was less affected by nitrate. Ammonium treatments had little impact on nitrite uptake, but prior nitrate exposure eliminated the slow phase and induced the accelerated phase. A small amount of tissue nitrite was needed for the accelerated phase. Cycloheximide restricted nitrite uptake development, but less so after prior nitrite or nitrate exposure. Potassium uptake was higher with nitrate than nitrite, and adding NaNO3 to nitrite increased potassium uptake. There is a connection between anion and potassium uptake, but it is not mandatory as the accelerated nitrite uptake can happen without rapid potassium uptake.
