Large-scale compressed air energy storage was analyzed to see if it makes sense economically in a sustainable energy era. An advanced-adiabatic system was studied, showing it can be technically feasible with an efficiency of around 50% or better. However, it may not be as cost-effective as underground pumped hydro storage.
