New method boosts survival of cryopreserved pig embryos, leading to more piglets.
The researchers wanted to improve the success rate of creating live piglets from frozen embryos. They froze early pig embryos using different solutions and found that adding sucrose to the freezing process increased the survival rate of the embryos. Embryos frozen with glycerol and sucrose had the highest survival rate and more maintained their original shape compared to those frozen with glycerol alone. When these embryos were transferred to a recipient pig shortly after thawing, they resulted in the birth of healthy piglets. This study shows that adding sucrose to the freezing process can help increase the chances of successfully producing live piglets from frozen embryos.
