Untapped Biodiversity Treasure Found in South-East Australian Waters
The researchers studied the marine life in shallow waters off the coast of south-east Australia. They found that the number of species and individuals increased with depth and sediment type. Species diversity was highest in poorly sorted sediments, and more species were found in deeper waters. Surprisingly, they discovered a total of 803 different species, with many of them never described before. This shows that shallow waters can be just as rich in species as the deep sea.
