Biochar in composting reduces emissions and enhances microbial activity.
The researchers studied how adding biochar to chicken manure and sawdust compost affects its maturity. They used different amounts of biochar in the compost piles and measured various indicators of maturity. The composts had high C/N values due to the type of carbon in the materials used, but other tests showed that they were mature. Piles with biochar had more microbial activity and lower ammonia emissions and nitrate leaching. Adding biochar to compost can improve its quality and reduce environmental impact.
