Socialist policies and free market create elite spaces in Chinese city.
The study looked at how different social groups live in different parts of Nanjing city. They used detailed data from the 2000 census to see how people are grouped together in neighborhoods. The researchers found that historical policies and the shift to a free market have led to rich and poor areas forming within the city. This has created a complex pattern of social differences and segregation in Nanjing's inner city.
