Barrier island beach nourishment projects impacted by tidal-inlet processes.
Several beach nourishment projects on barrier islands in west-central Florida were studied from 2006 to 2010. The performance of these projects was mainly affected by tidal-inlet processes disrupting sediment transport. Factors like project size, shoreline orientation, and geology also played a role. Beaches without nearshore sandbars experienced erosion, while those with sandbars had more stable shorelines. The entire barrier island system needs to be considered when evaluating nourishment success.
