High fertilizer salt concentration reduces seed viability for hydroseeding success.
The researchers tested how fertilizer salt concentration affects the viability of seeds and Rhizobium used for hydroseeding. They used fertilizer and KCl solutions with a specific osmotic potential. After 1 hour of contact, some seeds showed reduced viability, but the effects on Rhizobium were not significant. Trifolium repens seed was most affected, with viability decreasing by up to 30%. Other species tested were not significantly impacted. This suggests that when using high fertilizer concentrations, it may be necessary to separate Trifolium repens seed from the seed mix for hydroseeding.
