Commercial banks underwriting securities can actually help certify the value of companies. A study looked at securities underwritten by banks and investment houses in the past when both were allowed to do so. Surprisingly, investors were willing to pay more for securities underwritten by banks. This suggests that banks play a valuable role in certifying the value of companies, especially for junior and sensitive securities.
