Highway Subgrade Settlement: Soft Soil Pile Analysis Reveals Impactful Findings
Researchers used a computer model to study how soft soil settles under a highway. They found that settlement happens slowly as the soil gets compacted over time. The water pressure in the soil increases when the load on it gets heavier. Once each layer of soil is packed, the water pressure goes up at first and then stays the same as you go deeper. When all the soil is packed, the water pressure decreases until the soil is fully settled.
