New biomarkers discovered for Sphagnum in freshwater peatlands!
Long chain n-alkan-2-ones are found in peatland sediments and are specific biomarkers for Sphagnum moss in bogs. They are present in all Sphagnum species but not in other common bog plants. This means that these n-alkan-2-ones can be used to identify the presence of Sphagnum moss in ombrotrophic bogs.
