Eutrophication is a big problem in European water bodies, like in the Netherlands where aquatic plants are disappearing. The water from the river Rhine is making the problem worse by changing the sediments and causing more nutrients to be released. This process, called internal eutrophication, is happening because of changes in the sediment chemistry. Adding iron to the sediment can help stop this process.
